Fracture Care Q&A

What are the types of fractures?

Your bones are rigid and strong. However, if too much force is placed on a bone, a fracture may occur. The type and severity of your fracture varies and plays a significant role in your fracture care.

Types of fractures include:

Open fracture

When your broken bone pierces your skin, you have what’s referred to as an open fracture.

Stable fracture

A stable fracture is a type of fracture in which the broken bones are barely out of place.

Comminuted fracture

A comminuted fracture describes a shattered break in which the bone is in three or more pieces.

Spiral fracture

If your break spirals around the bone, you have what’s referred to as a spiral fracture.

Compression fracture

A compression fracture means the bone is crushed and may be flatter or wider. Vertebral compression fractures are common in people with osteoporosis.

Oblique fracture

An oblique fracture describes a bone that’s broken at an angle or diagonally across the bone.

Transverse fracture

If your bone is broken straight across horizontally, you have what’s referred to as a transverse fracture.

Though symptoms may vary, a broken bone can leave you in immediate pain and create swelling and difficulty using the affected body part.

What is fracture care?

As the term implies, fracture care refers to the treatment needed for healing your broken bone. Dr. Taba is an experienced orthopedic surgeon who specializes in fracture care.

For you to recover properly from your fracture, Dr. Taba must stabilize the broken bone and make sure it has an adequate supply of blood to promote the formation of new tissue.

What can I expect during fracture care?

The specifics of your fracture care may depend on the type of fracture you have and the location of your break, as well as your age, overall health, and medical history. The goal of your fracture care plan is to:

  • Alleviate your pain
  • Promote healing
  • Prevent complications
  • Restore normal use of the area of your body affected by the fracture

Your fracture care treatment plan may include immobilization and pain medication. Traction may also be recommended to improve bone alignment and proper healing.

For severe fractures, Dr. Taba may recommend surgery to realign your broken bones and secure them in place with pins and screws attached to a metal rod located outside your body. Your fracture may take several weeks or months to heal depending on the extent of the break.
